Most garage doors around here sit on houses built between 1962 and 2005, with the bulk of that stock going up through the 1980s and 90s. That matters for sensors because the photo-eye brackets on doors from that era were usually screwed into wood trim or thin sheet metal jamb liner, not into a rigid frame. Thirty to sixty years on, that trim has moved. Slabs settle unevenly, especially on the sloped lots common from South Juanita down through Moss Bay, and a quarter-inch of drop on one side of the opening throws the beam off. You don't see it happen. You just notice one day that the door reverses for no reason, or refuses to close at all until you nudge the sensor eye by hand. That's not the sensor failing. That's the bracket having wandered off the line it was set to thirty years ago.
If your door still closes every time and the light on the sensor eye is steady, not blinking, you don't need to touch anything. A sensor that's slightly out of true but still catching the beam isn't an emergency, and chasing perfect alignment on a door that's working is a good way to knock it further out. Wait if: the door closes fully and reverses only on actual obstructions, both eyes show a solid light with no flicker, and you haven't had to bend or re-aim anything in the last few months. Most of the drift in homes from this stock is slow, seasonal, and self-correcting enough that you can watch it rather than act on it. The exception is if the door starts closing on someone or something - that's not a wait-and-see situation regardless of how minor the drift looks.
This area sits in a cold-moderate climate band, not the deep freeze-thaw cycling of the Midwest, but enough temperature swing through the year to work metal brackets loose gradually. The bigger factor here is moisture. Garages built into the hillside grades common east of Totem Lake and through Kingsgate run damp for months, and condensation on the sensor lens does the same thing as misalignment - the door reads it as an obstruction and refuses to close. Wipe the lens before you touch the bracket. On older builds from the 1962-1984 range, wood jamb trim that sensors are screwed into swells and shrinks with humidity every winter, and that movement is enough to walk a beam a half-inch off center over a season. It's not damage, it's just the material doing what wood does in a wet climate.
The mistake we see most is someone re-aiming the sensor eyes without checking the bracket screws first. If the wood or metal the bracket is mounted to has moved, tightening a loose eye just re-aims it onto a surface that's still going to shift with the next humidity swing, and you're back out there in a month doing it again. Check the mount itself before you touch the aim. We also can't tell you over the phone whether a sensor is drifting from bracket movement or from a failing eye - the fix is different for each, and guessing wrong wastes a trip. If your door is one of the originals from the 1960s-80s wave of construction, replacing the bracket hardware once usually solves it for good rather than repeated re-aiming.
Condensation on the lens is the usual cause here, given how damp local garages run through the colder months. Wipe both sensor eyes with a dry cloth first. If the flicker continues after that, the bracket itself has likely shifted and needs to be checked, not just the lens cleaned.
